Leading Together: The Power of Community
By Ella Nielsen & Sophia Jeffrey
As co-presidents of Guelph Women in Leadership (GWIL), we’ve come to realize that leadership isn’t just about individual success—it’s about lifting each other up, creating spaces where we can all grow, and leaning on one another when challenges arise. Creating community is the foundation of everything we do, making organizations like GWIL meaningful and impactful.
There’s something uniquely powerful about the bonds between women who support, challenge, and inspire each other. Whether it’s a reassuring conversation before a big event, a pep talk after a tough week, or celebrating each other’s wins—no matter how big or small—our community reminds us that we’re never alone. We’ve both experienced firsthand the impact of strong female friendships. Through GWIL, we see how these connections empower women to confidently step into leadership roles, especially in male-dominated industries.
For too long, women have been told that success is a limited resource—that we have to compete with each other for opportunities, recognition, or a seat at the table. This mindset is especially prevalent in business, where women in leadership roles often face additional challenges. The corporate world is still predominantly male, and women in business must often navigate through barriers that their male counterparts do not experience. However, true progress happens when we reject that mindset and embrace community over competition. When women support women, we create more opportunities, more inspiration, and more space for all of us to succeed.

At GWIL, we’ve witnessed firsthand how powerful this sense of community is, especially when empowering women in business. We see it in the mentorship between directors and managers, the connections that begin at our networking events, and the way our team shows up for each other. Whether it’s offering advice on a difficult decision, sharing tips for overcoming challenges in male-dominated environments, or simply lending a listening ear, the women of GWIL support each other in navigating the complexities of leadership in business.
Leadership isn’t always easy, especially when women are often expected to work harder to prove themselves in business. The weight of responsibilities, expectations, and self-doubt can feel overwhelming, but having a community of women who understand the unique challenges we face makes all the difference. We are grateful to lead GWIL together—not just as co-presidents but as friends who support each other through tough decisions, push each other to take risks, and celebrate each other’s achievements.
We encourage every woman reading this to take a moment to recognize and appreciate those in your life who uplift and inspire you. Reach out, express your gratitude, and encourage a community where everyone feels supported and empowered to thrive. You don’t have to be in GWIL to make a difference—all it takes is a simple act of kindness and connection.
Together, we are stronger. Together, we flourish.
